Integrative Medicine Consult

What is Integrative Medicine?

Integrative medicine is healing-oriented medicine that takes the whole person into account (including mental, emotional, functional, spiritual, social, and community aspects—and treating the whole person rather than, for example, one organ system), as well as all aspects of lifestyle. It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative. Integrative health care often brings conventional and complementary approaches together in a coordinated way, including well-coordinated care between different providers and institutions.

The Principles of Integrative Medicine:

  • A partnership between patient and practitioner in the healing process
  • Appropriate use of conventional and alternative methods to facilitate the body’s innate healing response
  • Consideration of all factors that influence health, wellness and disease, including mind, spirit and community as well as body
  • A philosophy that neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative therapies uncritically
  • Recognition that good medicine should be based in good science, be inquiry driven, and be open to new paradigms
  • Use of natural, effective, less-invasive interventions whenever possible
  • Use of the broader concepts of promotion of health and the prevention of illness as well as the treatment of disease
  • Training of practitioners to be models of health and healing, committed to the process of self-exploration and self-development.

The Main Health Goals of the Integrative Complimentary Medicine program:

  • Anti-inflammatory, nutrient dense dietary recommendations designed for your individual needs and physiology

This program is designed to correct the environmental, dietary and lifestyle stressors that are the cause of most chronic conditions and promote healthier personal habits to prevent disease, and allow healing.   By using all the above modalities, lifestyle modifications, natural supplementation, and prescription medications when necessary, we support the body’s internal healing process to create health and vitality. The goal is to understand the root cause of disease and then treat the cause in order to remove the symptoms as opposed to alleviating symptoms without addressing the underlying problems.

Bioidentical Hormone Therapy Program

As we age, hormone levels (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, pregnenolone, melatonin) fall and lead to symptoms of perimenopause/menopause in women, and symptoms of Andropause in men. Utilizing bioidentical hormones improves low hormone levels and puts our bodies back into balance optimizing our health.  Unlike their synthetic counterparts, bioidentical hormones are compounded hormones derived from naturally-occurring sources, such as soy or yams. Bioidentical hormones are designed to be structurally indistinguishable from the natural hormone made by the human body. This exact-match replication reduces side effects and risks, as well as enhances effectiveness of the treatment.

Bioidentical hormones are compounded at a compounding pharmacy. Compounding pharmacies operate under guidelines established by the FDA. Compounded hormones are specifically made by a compounding pharmacist in the exact strength and dosage as prescribed by the attending practitioner. Bioidentical hormones, in most cases, cannot be patented and made into mass prescription forms by large pharmaceutical companies. Instead, doses are carefully determined after an experienced and highly-trained hormone therapy practitioner meets with the patient to review and discuss their medical history, symptoms, lifestyle and lab results. This information ensures that patients get a treatment plan and prescriptions that meet the specific needs of their body.

Hormonal balance is not achieved by meeting some ubiquitous standard of normal—balance is reached when optimal function is restored for the individual person. Bio-identical hormones are available in the form of a pill, cream, patch, gel, and injectable.

The following are typical symptoms of hormone imbalance in women (perimenopause/menopause):

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety, depression, and irritability, mood swings
  • Low libido
  • Memory lapses and trouble concentrating
  • Weight gain
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Lack of muscle tone
  • Vaginal dryness/tears
  • Vaginal pain during sexual intercourse
  • Loss of elasticity and collagen (skin, mucous membranes)
  • Loss of bone density

The following are typical symptoms of hormone imbalance in men (andropause):

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low libido
  • Muscle mass loss
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety, depression, and irritability, low vigor, low vitality
  • Memory lapses and trouble concentrating
  • Weight gain
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Loss of elasticity and collagen (skin, mucous membranes)
  • Loss of bone density

Proactive genetic testing offering healthy adults without a strong personal or family history of disease an opportunity to learn about how their genes could potentially impact their health. Three testing options analyze up to 147 genes that are well-established indicators of a significantly increased risk of developing hereditary cancers, cardiovascular conditions, and other medically important disorders.

– Diagnostic Testing for thousands of different genes (cardiac, metabolic health, neurology, nephrology, dermatology, hereditary cancer, hematology, ophthalmology, immunology)

– The diagnostic-grade tests are performed in a CLIA- and CAP-certified laboratory and reviewed by a team of Ph.D. scientists, lab directors, and board-certified genetic counselors.

Telomere Testing:

A telomere test is a blood test that measures the length of telomeres, the protective structures located at the tips of chromosomes. Chromosomes are structures within cells that contain a person’s genes. Most chromosomes have telomeres that normally shorten as a person gets older. By analyzing telomere length, individuals may gain insights into their health, lifespan and susceptibility to diseases. This information enables the person to make lifestyle adjustments that can lead to better health and a longer life.

Telomeres are known to respond well to a healthy lifestyle. A person who maintains a good diet, exercises regularly and is free from constant heavy stress, is less likely to endure accelerated telomere shortening. This can result in a young biological age, regardless of the chronological age.

Epigenetic changes based on lifestyle modification: The primary benefit of a telomere test may be the information it provides about a person’s biological age.  The test is intended to reveal a person’s biological age, which is the age a person shares with most people of similar physiology. Biological age measures changes in the physical structures of the body (such as organs and bones), sensory perception, and motor skills, whereas chronological age measures the number of years since birth.  A person’s chronological age and biological age aren’t always the same.  By having a younger biological age , a person may be able to live a longer healthier life.
